The first single from the Kingston duo’s new album, Colón Man

No one makes riddims quite like Equiknoxx. Each production by the duo (aka the Kingston, Jamaica-based musicians Gavsborg and Time Cow) is bespoke and detailed—as if each sound is carefully handmade, from the glockenspiels to the harpsichords and screwy samples of Silver Apples songs.

Of all their artisan riddims, the curiously titled “Enter a Raffle... Win a Falafel,” is among their most finely wrought. The first single from their new album, Colón Man, doesn’t even sound like music at first. Rather, the first noises they offer—interlocking gears, clicks, and industrial clacks—could be a field recording from the inside of Big Ben. Slowly, the track widens its frame with bubbles of percussion and what it sounds like a very bass-heavy xylophone. Every few bars, the duo drop in screeches of birds and the leathery sound of wings taking flight, colliding fleshy noise with machine groove. It’s often hard to imagine how a deejay could tame the delightfully dense works of Equiknoxx, and this new track brings their madman experimentation to a whole new level.
