Skepta’s Konnichiwa has won the 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize, which honors the best British album of the year. Jarvis Cocker announced the winner at the ceremony. Before performing “Man,” Skepta said, “Rest in peace David Bowie. Rest in peace Amy Winehouse.” The album beat out albums by David Bowie (Blackstar), Radiohead, Anohni, the 1975, and others. The Comet Is Coming: Channel the Spirits
This year the Mercury voting system changed to allow fan input. Fan votes determined one album that made the final shortlist, which included five other records chosen by the judging panel. The 1975 won the fan vote.
Benjamin Clementine won the prize last year. Previous winners include James Blake, PJ Harvey, the xx, Pulp, Portishead, Arctic Monkeys, Antony and the Johnsons, Franz Ferdinand, and more.
