Today, Jack White and Third Man Records made history. They were successful in their attempt to play the first phonographic record in space. As previously detailed, they launched a “space-proof” turntable in a vessel dubbed “the Icarus Craft,” which was attached to a high-altitude balloon. As it reached the highest possible heights, the machine played their 2010 single, Carl Sagan’s “A Glorious Dawn.” Watch the entire thing (or, if you prefer, an abridged recap video) below.
The launch, which was pre-taped, happened somewhere outside of Marsing, Idaho. When the record would end mid-flight, the arm picked up and started the song over again. It flew for an hour and 20 minutes, and after flying over 94,000 feet up, the balloon popped as the Icarus plummeted back to Earth. The turntable was still spinning as it made its landing.
