Listen to the New York MC’s latest track

Ratking MC Wiki has slowly and carefully found his own voice, releasing his first solo mixtape in 2015 and testing out new collaborators since then. While his early work with the trio burst with youthful exuberance, his outlook seems to have gotten cloudier. On “Icarus,” the New York MC finds himself reflective. The track opens with a sample, a distant voice threatening violence. Atop a swirling synth beat, anchored by a simple, syncopated boom-bap kick and snare, the young MC sounds like a grizzled old man that’s “tired of the fuckery.” In the track’s visual companion, he looks the part, nailing his scumbag chic aesthetic, as he stomps through the snow with a cane, wearing dirty sweats, beaten Pumas, and a “Sopranos” jacket. “I’m done trying to get to the sun,” he raps, as if the world is swirling out of control around him, and the only thing that keeps his feet on the ground is this song.
